So Holly has been reading a book entitled "What's the Least I can Believe and Still Be a Christian?" She figured it would be interesting to at least see what he had to say. She has shared some of the most unbelievable parts with me, but I have not read it myself. I did however want to comment on the premise of the book.
I was thinking about the fact that as Christians we are described as the bride of Christ, it made me remember a story from my past. I have to go all the way back to my junior year of college. At the time I was dating a young lady by the name of Holly Smith. I decided I wanted to marry this young lady and spend the rest of my life with her. So I had it all planned out perfectly how it would take place. She flew out to Los Angeles to visit me and we went down for a hike along the beach. Secretly I was looking for the perfect place to propose just as the sun was going down. Eventually I found the spot and we sat there chatting while the sun was going down.
As the sun was just setting, I got down on one knee, looked up at her and said the words she had been waiting all her life to hear. "What is the least I can do to get you to marry me? I mean, what I'm looking for is maybe to meet you at the altar, then after that you can make some meals for me, keep the house clean and when I feel like it I will come and talk to you. I'm not really looking for a change in my life, I was just kind of hoping to fit you in to what I have going on."
Ok, so that's not really how it went, but why would we think that this would be acceptable for a relationship with Christ, but not with our spouse? Yes, we have been saved by grace, through faith, but that salvation should drive us toward a deeper relationship with Christ. A Christian should hunger and thirst for the word of God and we should devour it to find truth and when we find that truth there is no way we can live without it affecting our lives.
