Isaiah 40:6,8 "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."

A typical day here at RGBI
I know it is a little late for this post since we will be leaving here in just three weeks, but I thought it would still be fun to share our life here.
We begin each day with this wonderful group of folks. Together we study Spanish grammar which provides many opportunities to laugh.
On Tuesday and Thursday we attend chapel. Here is what it looks like. It is usually totally in Spanish. We've had a few messages in English.
Extra credit to anyone who can tell me what hymn this song is in English.
Then I join the ladies for conversation.
On Thursdays we perform a drama. I never thought HS drama would be so handy in missionary work, but it has been.
We praise God for our time here at RGBI. We've made great friends and grown in our knowledge of Spanish.

Gabrielle's Birthday
Gabby's birthday began at school with cupcakes and classmates. And no, the boys didn't mind that all the frosting was pink.
Then we celebrated at home.
Two days later we made the cake.
Then we celebrated again with our classmates and the other two that had a birthday.
It was the longest birthday celebration we've had. I'm so thankful for the gift God gave us nine years ago. She continues to bless our lives daily. Thank-you Gabby for your cheerful heart, generous spirit, and loving compassion. I'm glad God gave you to us.

My marriage
When we ask others about the reason for getting married, we often
hear things like, “Because I love him,” “Because
he makes me feel special and important,” “Because he completes me,” or “Because I can’t
imagine my life without him.” All of
these are great reasons, and should be part of any marriage, but I’m learning
that there is an even deeper reason, one that often goes unrecognized.
That reason is because it brings God glory. Now we may have thought that, but pushed it
aside declaring it too lofty. But I
think we push it aside, because it is awkward and makes us feel uncomfortable.
Why? Because when we look at marriage through
the lens of God’s glory, we realize it isn’t as much about ourselves as we
thought, and what is marriage if it is not about us?
You see I’m learning that my marriage isn’t ultimately about
myself. Its purpose goes much deeper
than having my needs and desires met, and having someone to share life with. It is about God’s glory. Here’s how.
In my home are three kids, growing, learning, and
imitating. Do they see a good example of
what a Christian marriage is to be? Do
they see me being my husband’s suitable helper (Gen. 2:18)? Do they see the joy of fulfilling my role as
his helper? Do they see in my marriage what God will one day want them to have in their own? Do
they see what God wants them to live out for my grandchildren? Do they see God’s glory?
When I am in a group of women who are complaining about
their marriages, do my words about my marriage reflect the grace of God? Does my attitude reveal the love of the
Spirit (Gal. 5:22)? Do they see God’s
glory?
In public when I am speaking to my husband, and others can
hear, are my words respectful? Am I a
good representative of Christ and His church (Eph. 5:22-33)? Do they see God’s
glory?
On the mission field the people we will be serving will not
be Christians. They won’t know what it
means to have a Christian marriage. Will
they look at mine and see a difference? Will
they look at mine and see my Savior? Will
they look at my marriage and see something they want? Will they see God’s glory?
You see, my marriage isn’t so much about me. There are way too many people watching for me
to think so selfishly. There are way too
many people that have me under the microscope for me to look at my marriage only
for what I can get from it. There are way too many people, who will only see
Christ’s heart of love, service, and sacrifice by my portrayal of Him. There are way too many people watching our
marriage, for me to think, it’s only about me.
You see in every place, in every situation, my marriage is about
someone greater: God and His glory.

Not just Spanish study
Last week Holly and I went with a bunch of the language school students to see the movie "God's Not Dead". I was a little hesitant at first because I didn't know anything about it and I am not a fan of Hollywood making movies about Christianity, and usually in the process making Christians and Christianity look bad. That was definitely not the case with this movie. If you get a chance and are looking for a good movie to watch, it has my recommendation. It really sticks to the issue of the question, does the Christian God exist? If you are looking for an apologetic defense of the faith, this is not it, but I don't think that was the intention. Although it does bring up a few good basic points to think about without going too deep into finer theological issues. (Disclaimer: I do think the finer theological issues are important, but you cannot address issues which involve the nature and character of God with someone who does not believe in the existence of God. That is like trying to convince someone that snow is white, when they don't believe that snow exists.)

School Work
In our public speaking class we have papers with various requirements that we write then read to the class. One of the papers was about using an object to teach a Biblical truth. Here's what I did.
Based on the parable of the Sower and the Seed (Lk 8), I planted the four types of soil Jesus describes: packed, rocky, weedy, and rich. As you can see from the weak and non-existent plants above, only the rich soil, cup #4, has what it takes to produce a crop.
I really enjoyed this project because it made me realize just how effective Jesus' use of stories and images was. How much greater understanding one has of the different types of responses to the Bible when they can compare their heart to the types of soil. I pray that my heart will always be like cup #4.
By the way, I did choose my seed packet according to which green beans are the best. Yeah, KY.

Follow Up
I got ahold of the HVAC guy yesterday and asked him what the problem was with our furnace. He said they discovered the electricians had mislabeled the circuit breaker, and the breaker which was labeled "dryer" was actually the furnace. When we left the house in January, I had flipped off all the non-essential circuits in the house. One of these being... the dryer. So during the entire frigid winter, the basement and the main floor did not have any heat from the furnace. Before we left I made the decision (hindsight tells us now that it was God leading me) to leave a space heater on each floor and leave them running. Had I not done so, we would have had some problems. Again, just another example of God watching out for us when we didn't even know what he was doing.
So, they flipped the breaker back on and the furnace is now functioning again. And after we pay them for coming to flip a switch, everything will be all good once again.
Please continue to pray for the sale of our house. We are set to close on the 25th of April.
